WARNING - RATS!!

I happened to notice on television news recently warnings about a rat plague in a couple of states. No sooner had I noted the warning on TV than I received two rather disturbing reports, one which set back caravanning plans for a couple, and could have stalled travel for another.
First traveller took his 4WD for a quick service before setting off telling his mechanic he also needed a headlight globe replaced. Mechanic later phoned him to come and look at his vehicle. On his arrival the mechanic lifted the bonnet of the 4WD pointing out a large amount of rat excreta. Not only that, but part of the rat was still embedded near the motor head. Obviously the rodent had found a warm place to camp for a couple of nights.
Second traveller went to start his motor home to set off for a two month trip, but couldn't start it. Thinking the battery was flat he phoned for road service. On inspection of the motor area the roadside mechanic found a dead rat which had also chewed through a reasonable amount of wiring. It took two more days for new wiring at a cost of $340 - 00.
While it's cold and wet and there's the chance of rats in any area, it will pay you to constantly check not only motor vehicles but also caravans and camper trailers. These rodents also don't seem to mind where they camp! And finally, one word of caution. Do NOT leave rat bait under the bonnet or near caravans. If you forget it's there or it drops out it could kill other animals.
