With lots of great options available, how do you choose your caravan?
My needs had changed recently, and I was faced with that dilemma. Having previously owned tents, a camper trailer, and a range of vans from compact pop-top to large and luxurious fully enclosed ones, I was a seasoned traveller. Still, I felt overwhelmed by the choices.
I wrote a ‘wish list’ for the inside and outside of my ideal caravan. But first I needed to consider things that I couldn’t do anything about. Since I wasn’t changing my towing vehicle, I had to adhere to its recommended towing capacity of 2500 kilos. Thankfully it still allowed me to carry the maximum internal load of 400 kilos. I certainly needed all of that, since I write and photograph recipes on the road and need to pack extra camera and office equipment. A load that size needs to be carried on a van with a double axle. Those demands suggested a van somewhere between 18 and 20 feet long. I felt I had made a good start; now back to my wish list.
Being a light sleeper I opted for a full van rather than a pop-top, and the luxury of a queen size mattress, my very first one.
Because I cook a lot, I was most particular about the kitchen. I wanted a deep sink and a stove with high gas output for efficient cooking, preferably with a fan-forced oven. A two-door fridge, a cleverly designed bench, and plenty of cupboard space were also essential.
For extra office space, I decided on a collapsible table to be mounted somewhere in the bedroom area. Since I like to visit those out-of-the-way places, a fully equipped bathroom would add some extra comfort.
With being on the road for months at a time, I travel with a seasonal range of clothes. For extra storage, I suggested that part of the space under the bed be made into drawers. And a washing machine would help minimise the amount of clothing I needed.
The outside of the van was easy. After seeing them on other caravans, I opted for two flip-side tables. An external gas outlet would make cooking outdoors a breeze. Speaking of which, one annexe wall would help block the breeze nicely.
I presented my wish list to several caravan outlets. I chose the one that presented me with a workable layout at the right price. I’m now again one happy traveller. Say “Hi” if you see a van with my ‘Caravan Chef’ logo.
