iPHONE App FOR PENGUINS!
By: John Westbury - November 2011
Technology is going ahead in leaps and bounds, and when it comes to folk my age which I refuse to allude to, I wonder some days how I manage to try and keep up to date with it. As a retired journalist I recall my first ever article was knocked out on a Royal typewriter which didn't have spell check, and the sub editor, a lady old enough to be my grandmother at the time, did not tolerate spelling errors and made her point known with a rap over the knuckles with a metal printers ruler. There were no mobile phones then and the normal phone had a dial which you turned around with your finger to dial the number you wanted.
These days everyone from a very young age to older folk like me has a mobile phone. My mobile phone is a simple one with stored numbers of my kids and family in case some day I forget where I am or where I'm meant to be going. Recently someone asked why I didn't have an iPhone because it was a very smart one to have and I could get lots of free apps with it. While the word "free" always interests me the word "app" didn't until I discovered that this "app" item can provide one with some most interesting material. Now I have discovered that if I have an iPhone and visit the penguins at Phillip Island here in Victoria, I can learn a lot about them and the surrounds from an "app".
Many people world wide know about our great Phillip Island Nature Parks which is home to the world famous penguin parade and other popular wildlife attractions. The nature park's marketing department has now heralded in a new era for visitors by enabling them to download FREE an app for the Phillip Island Penguin Parade from the Apple iTunes Store. This comprehensive app features a map and visitor guide to Phillip Island Nature Parks' attractions, audio tours, a quiz, wild life photo gallery and even a penguin arrival calender.
The Nature Parks' sales & marketing manager, Nicoleta Giurgiu says the new iPhone app is part of their commitment to innovative methods to engage with their visitors. "The app can be used to plan a visit to Phillip Island, book tickets and during a visit discover more about the local wildlife and natural attractions or download an audio tour; and post visit to share your experience with friends through the photo gallery", she said.
If you would like more information about Phillip Island and the iPhone app visit their website at www.penguins.org.au If you have been thinking of heading to Phillip Island, I can assure you it's a great place with lots to see and do, and, if you are travelling don't forget to check out the BIG4 holiday facility at Phillip Island where they will really look after you.
