I'm a typical mere male Virgo! Like other MM Virgo's I believe that everything should be kept in its place so that when I go to find it it will be there! To complete one simple task should be easy and I shouldn't have to do it several ways. But like other MM Virgo's it doesn't always seem to work out that way. I find that when I go to my MM shed to find something it seems to have been moved. When we go travelling in our caravan I find that this seems to happen as well. So what annoys me when we are away travelling you ask?
Like many travelers downunder I like to keep a record of everything for future reference and to share this information with others. I had what I thought was a good idea. I purchased a few exercise books and recorded details in individual ones such as a book for fuel costs and kilometres travelled, caravan park reviews and costs, groceries, eating out and take aways, attractions, repairs and a daily diary of what we did. That seemed to work ok for a little while until this MM asked "where's the exercise book for our fuel costs dear?" After some searching it was found and life returned to normal. This happened a few times and was frustrating. MM then had another idea! I would create a spreadsheet on my laptop computer and life would be good. That didn't seem to work either because one had to develop lots of spreadsheets.
In recent times I found that I wasn't the only one who either had this problem or was looking for a simple way of keeping records of travels downunder. Coral and Fred who have just purchased a new van and are looking forward to travelling around Australia contacted Whats Up Downunder asking if there was a programme they could use to record all these things. Well, there is! Gail Bennett has been motor homing for over 30-years and always wrote a journal and recorded information about camp sites, fuel costs and many other things. Gail also had her own spreadsheets but decided there had to be a better way of recording all this information.
"We travelled around Australia and had three different spreadsheets and a word document and photos seperately and decided there was a better way to do it, so, NOMAD NOTES was born", Gail tells us. I've now inserted this programme into my laptop and thanks to Gail's invention the problems of recording everything I need to is over and I'm very confident this will be well received by many travellers. So, what can NOMAD NOTES do?
Firstly there's fuel consumption records. You can record the number of litres purchased, cost per litre, total cost per vehicle, where you purchased it and much more.
You can also record all details of vehicle maintainence such as repairs, costs of parts, oils, insurance policy details and much more. There's provision for a "trip diary" where you can record a single trip or a trip away to a life time on the road. There's a daily journal section where you can record all the events of the day, any thoughts or ideas you have and also has a spell checker. The "camp site journal" records all aspects of your camp sites including location, type of accomadation, costs, features, pet details and even GPS points. You can also record all other expenses such as food, cost of attractions and all other sundries in a seperate "expenses" section. As well there is provision for a "photo album" where you can arrange photos into seperate albums for all parts of your trip. As well you can record details of where to find your favourite TV and radio stations. And how's this! You can even record details of people you meet and want to keep in contact with. You can record their name, address, phone numbers, email addresses and lots more.
This unique program has been available since 2008 and has had several upgrades. But wait, there's more! The next upgrade will include the ability to edit categories, towns and regions and should be available in the next few months. But I take my hat off to Gail because it's going to become even better again! Gail's next project with NOMAD NOTES is to get a Mac/Ipad version out as well. There's no release date just yet, but keep watching our site for more information as we also hope to be giving one of these great programs away in a fabulous Xmas stocking we are creating.
