If you are looking for an ideal weekend getaway, or an anytime of the week getaway, why not have a look at Venus Bay and the Venus Bay Caravan Park.
Venus Bay is about 150km from Melbourne, 60km from Wilsons Promontory (better known as Wilsons Prom) and 45 minutes from Phillip Island. You have a wide range of accommodation choices at the park, you can bring your own and settle in to one of the big shady sites, maybe even an en-suite one. If you want a cabin then there is a good range there, going from standard (with and without ensuites) to their wonderful 2 bedroom cabins. You can make your budget go a little further if you choose one without bedding and bring your own, check that out when you book.
The park has a lovely pool, tennis court, playground and recreation room with TV (this has a heater for winter getaways!). If you have room in the car, bring the bikes plus helmets and enjoy getting around the park on them. There is a café on site, but if you want to do your own catering there is a well stocked shop too.
Now, it is time to see what there is to do in the area. The main surf beach is only 800 m from the park, and is patrolled every day in the summer school holidays and the summer weekends. If you are into fishing then this is a perfect spot with excellent surf, river and estuary fishing.
Wilson Prom, which is the southern most tip of the Australian mainland, is reasonably close by and really deserves attention. There are so many different forest and eco types that you wonder just how big it is! There is a normal beach and then the beautifully named Squeaky Beach with its brilliant white quartz sand. As far as forest styles go, you can see heath land, Eucalypt forest and Rainforest if you take the Lilly Pilly Gully Nature Walk. The northern part of Wilsons Prom is officially designated as a wilderness. Then there are all the native animals and birds – the Prom is just a stunning place. I am told that if you walk up Mt Oberon you will see one of the best panoramas in Victoria.
Further along from Venus Bay you can see the Cape Liptrap Lighthouse, which was built in 1913 and, as it never had a lighthouse keeper, is said to be the first fully automated commonwealth lighthouse in Australia.
Venus bay has a small population, but as you can imagine with so much in the area, it balloons during school holidays, so it is essential to book ahead.
