Some parks have a long history, but not always as a caravan park, and Swan Hill Riverside Caravan Park is no exception.
The site, beautifully located on the banks of the River Murray, was the site for the first hospital in Swan Hill, built in 1860 at a total cost of ₤400. Even in those days Doctors were enticed to distant places and the first one, Dr Benjamin Gummow, was offered ₤500 a year as part of his retainer. The hospital was relocated in 1889 and the land was then used as tennis courts.
The caravan park was developed simply because people were camping there anyway so an amenities block was built and it went from there. There are plenty of sites all along the edge of the Murray which always has water in it, and these are very popular as you can imagine. There are also sites off the water, plus a lovely range of cabins to suit just about everyone from the standard open plan en-suite cabin to the luxury cabin which will sleep six and has a huge sofa to sit six.
Swan Hill was named by Thomas Mitchell in 1836 and is in the middle of a strong agricultural region with some wineries building a great reputation. One of the local tourism booklets has information on a couple of excellent drives in and around Swan Hill. The rural district drive is 44km and takes you through the Woorinen District. If you are there are the right time you will be blown away by the blossoming of the thousands of stonefruit trees.
The city tour is only 9km and takes you around the highlights of the early pioneer days including the Burke and Wills Tree. This was planted some 130 years ago to commemorate the visit in 1860 of Burke and Wills to Swan Hill. In the land of big things, this is thought to be the largest Moreton Bay Fig in the Southern Hemisphere, standing around 30m high, 44m wide and the trunk has a diameter of 4m.
The last drive takes you out to Lake Boga which has a couple of claims to fame. One is the Catalina Museum, which is housed in the old communications centre from WWII. There is also an Observatory and Planetarium here with regular tours and night viewings.
The combination of a superb location on the banks of the river, history, great food and wine, plus places to go and things to do makes Swan Hill an important place to stay.
