Some addresses just sum up a delightful feeling before you know where they are, and Poinciana Tourist Park has one of these – it is on Scenic Highway on the Capricorn Coast, in a township called Yeppoon.
The Capricorn Coast gained its name from the Tropic of Capricorn which is one of five major circle of latitude that you see on world maps. The Tropic of Capricorn is the most southerly line of latitude where the sun can appear to be directly overhead at midday during the Summer Solstice (in December). What I did not know was that it is drifting about 15m northwards each year.
So, if you want to be on a major world line, go no further that the Poinciana Tourist Park, in Queensland. They have a range of cabins for you to choose from, depending on your budget, plus powered sites (some with concrete slab and some with grass) and unpowered tent sites. There is a lovely shaded swimming pool on the park, and a couple of BBQ areas too.
If you are travelling with your dog (they are welcome in your accommodation) the best news is that Poinciana is only 500m from Lammermoor Beach which is dog friendly.
One of the advantages of being on the Tropic of Capricorn is that it makes the weather so much easier – milder summers (being on the ocean helps there too) and warmer winters – almost like Camelot!
There is plenty to do when you get to Yeppoon, it all depends how busy you want to be. Great Keppel Island is only a 30 minute ferry ride away, with two ferries per day, which opens up the Great Barrier Reef to you.
Emu Park, about 20km from Yeppoon, is the home to the Singing Ship, which was built in 1970 to commemorate the 1770 discovery trip of Capt James Cook. The physical design is reminiscent of a ship but its shape and position interact with the almost constant breeze, so that it ‘sings’ – an amazing piece of modern sculpture.
Yeppoon is only 1.5km from Poinciana Tourist Park and has a delicious range of places to eat, and plenty of opportunities to have some retail therapy if needed. If you are really lucky and get to the beach early enough, and on the right day at the right time, you will see small crabs by their thousands heading home for the day, truly an amazing sight.
Poinciana Tourist Park on the Scenic Highway is a great place to be to enjoy everything the area has to offer.
