POONA CARAVAN PARK - PEACEFUL!

Brian & Kay Seymour are good lawn bowls friends and also love caravanning around the great downunder. Earlier this year they told me they were heading to Poona in Queensland, so not knowing where it was or what it was like I asked them to review the caravan park and general area and take some photos for Whats Up Down Under. They have just arrived back looking really refreshed and have had a great time there, and here is their story on Poona.
"My husband and I have been escaping Melbourne's winters since 1994 and have stayed at most coastal towns in Queensland in that time. This year we decided to try somewhere different and while surfing the internet found a place called Poona. It looked good and we decided to try it, after all if you don't like it you can always move, which is the advantage of having a caravan. So, did we like it?? Put it this way, we stayed eight weeks!
"Poona is a small coastal village 32 klms south of Maryborough right opposite the southern tip of Fraser Island, and, at low tide you feel you can walk across to the island. Poona is a very neat and tidy settlement with nice modern houses and made roads. Most of the homes are holiday homes and are very well looked after. There is a cafe / general store owned by two sisters who are very obliging they have a pizza night every Thursday. On Sunday you can get a great roast for only $10 (eat in or takeaway). We must say their pork roast was great! On Fridays you can buy a cheap dinner and dessert at the community hall run by the residents. There may not be a lot of choice but for $8-50 you won't go away hungry. During our stay we had fisherman's platter salad and chips, lamb curry and rice, braised steak and onions with vegetables and everything was nicely cooked and tasty.
"The caravan park at Poona which is also pet friendly is great and our hosts Pauline and Don are very helpful people with a good sense of humor. The park is situated right on the foreshore, the sites are large and facilities very good with plenty of hot water for showers and the temperature never varies. As well there is a good swimming pool and free BBQ's. There is live country and western music and bush poetry with Rocket and Ally every night except Sundays. On Saturday's Don provides a free sausage sizzle and on Wednesdays it's free pancakes. We were never hungry! Sunrise is good and just have a look at the beautiful photo we took of the moon staircasing as it came up over the water in front of the caravan park.
"If you are looking for a laid back relaxing holiday with good fishing and crabbing we can think of no better place than Poona. Most people are fishing folk who take their tinnies and dogs with them. There is a good boat ramp adjacent to the caravan park and you should take a bait pump as there are plenty of yabbies to had at low tide. There's also plenty of room to park your boat and trailer at the caravan park. It seems they have been keeping Poona a secret as I haven't spoken to many Victorians and other interstaters who have ever heard of Poona. Most of the visitors were Queenslanders who go there at every chance.
"There is a lawn bowls club and golf course at Boonooroo about 15-minutes away by car. We found this to be a very quiet and peaceful caravan park, and even the birds seemed to be late starters. So, if it's the quiet life you are after with a friendly atmosphere then we recommend you give Poona a try. We have already booked for next year".
