When you have a caravan park in McLaren Vale you would expect it to be surrounded by vineyards, and you will not be disappointed as the entrance to the park runs along 10 acres of vines that are part of the park – but they do not do their own crush or wine making!
The park is huge and well treed hardly describes it. There are some lovely secluded sites where the caravans really to seem to nestle themselves in and enjoy the peace and quiet of the surroundings.
The McLaren Vale is world famous as a major wine producing area and the list of brands is very impressive, when you are driving into the town both sides of the roads have a different wine makers name about lamppost distance apart. They go on for a very long time and the area now has dozens of cellar doors. So if you are planning to do some serious wine tasting then you need to book in for a good long stay.
The first wines are believed to have been planted in 1838, two years after South Australia was proclaimed a colony, but it really started to take off when Thomas Hardy bought the Tintara vineyard in 1853.
McLaren Vale is on the Fleurieu Peninsular whose name comes from a meeting between Matthew Flinders and the French explorer Nicholas Baudin. They meet at the mouth of the Murray River (hence the Bay called Encounter Bay). Baudin named the peninsular after his patron Charles Pierre Claret, Comte du Fleurieu.
You can enjoy great local food and wine in a relaxing style at one of the cafes and restaurants. To make it easier to get into town from the park, there is a bike track into McLaren Vale and further on to Willunga if you want.
The Peninsular is well known for some stunning walks, and one of these is the Heysen Trail which is a major walk taking many days (although you can just do small bits) starting in the Flinders Ranges. However the 5km McLaren Vale Heritage Trail is somewhat shorter and easier.
This is an exceptionally beautiful part of the country and well worth a visit.
