Albury Wodonga is an interesting place, one second you are in Victoria and the next you are in New South Wales and you didn’t feel a thing! The twin towns are a real hub of activity and a have some amazing attractions.
One of which is Lake Hume, a massive man made lake (which currently is awash with water). Building started in 1919 and took 17 years to complete, but when the lake was full it was the biggest dam in the Southern Hemisphere, in fact one of the worlds largest. Today it is a producer of electricity and a supplier of 4 million megalitres of water per year to irrigations schemes in three states.
The very good news for travelers is that the Lake Hume Tourist Park is right on the foreshore of the lake, with some sites and cabins having lake frontage and views. The park has powered and unpowered sites and 4 styles of cabins to choose from. There is also a swimming pool and a seasonal water slide. The park is really close to town, but as an added bonus as there is a well stocked (and licenced) general store on site with meals to eat in or takeaway. It seems that the ice-creams may be a problem, something to do with the superb flavours!
Each year the Rotary Club of Bellbridge and the Commercial Club Fishing Section host the Yamaha Lake Hume Classic, with the park as the centre point for everything to do with this event. If you want to know more about it then why not have a look at the website www.thelakehumeclassic.com
As you would expect with a park in this fabulous location water sports and fun are the main attraction with fishing, sailing and water skiing high on the list of must do’s. If you want to keep on dry land for a day or so, then there is plenty to do. There are some excellent wineries around and cheese made in the area. There is a major Farmers Market with a great range of the local fare at the Gateway Visitor Information Centre every second Saturday from 8am to noon.
I did not know that the Flying Fruit Fly Circus was born in Albury, just another part of the rich cultural heritage in the area. One more thing, if you are a coffee addict, then you might like to take a trip through Dean St, Albury, (don’t forget to check out the lane ways) to see if you can find the perfect coffee – it has a very good chance of being there!
Lake Hume Tourist Park gives you a country holiday in a modern city – what a great mix.
