If you are looking for somewhere within a couple of hundred kms of Sydney, with beaches, national parks, cruises, great places to eat and wonderful places to stay then Jervis Bay is your spot.
It is always good to make sure you have somewhere to stay, and the Jervis Bay Caravan Park will make this choice easy for you. They have some stunning cabins overlooking the water, and if you have a quick look at their website you will see what I mean. The cabins may have a number but they also have a name – Riverview, Mariners Quarters, Captains Cottage – I really like that personal way of identifying cabins.
There are powered and unpowered sites too, and the setting is just gorgeous. The park is really well positioned, it has its own private boat ramp and jetty into Currambene Creek. If Creek swimming is not your thing, then don’t worry the heated pool and spa will fill the gap. There is a playground to keep the kids entertained and three undercover BBQs for that essential easy meal.
Jervis Bay plays a big part in the history of Australia – throughout all times. James Cook saw it in 1770, Lt Bowen on the Atlantic named it in 1791, G W Evens surveyed it in 1811and Governor Macquarie visited the same year. The indigenous population was displaced in 1822, but the land was granted to the Wreck Bay Aboriginal Community Council in 1995.
In between then the first Australian Naval College was establish. The land was selected in 1911, but the Jervis Bay Territory Acceptance Act 1915 had to be passed to take the land back from NSW, to enable a federal Naval College to open its doors. Now it is known as HMAS Creswell and still operates as a naval college.
Today there are walks through the national park, sailing, kayaking, fishing, horse riding, tennis, bowls and golf. There is also an interesting place called the Husky Pub – really it is the Jervis Bay Hotel in Huskisson, and with our love of knicknames you can see how it became the Husky Pub.
While you are thinking about all things naval, the Lady Denman Heritage Centre in Huskisson has one of the early Sydney Ferries on display, called the Lady Denman she was built in Huskisson in 1911 and sailed the Harbour until 1979 when she gracefully retired back home for some much needed restoration.
Jervis Bay is an area with a little of everything for everyone, and the Jervis Bay Caravan Park is the perfect base.
