The Victorian High Country is quite special, there is something there for everyone, all year. We have been to the high country in winter and it is spectacular, just as it is in summer. The complete change from one season to the other – warm to cold, green to white – amazes me.
It is good when you find somewhere to stay that makes it easy to enjoy all the seasons. As someone who prefers a reasonably warm climate, I really appreciate a cabin that keeps me warm in the middle of a snowy winter! There are great shady sites for summer too, with plenty of room to spread out and relax. Rex and Robyn Salt at The High Country Holiday Park go out of their way to make you welcome and comfortable.
There is so much to do in the area, and I think the park website is one of the best avenues for your tourist information, it is full of things to do and places to go. The site also includes a number of U-tube videos to watch so that you can really get a feel for the area and activities.
One of the things I like about the area is the completely different taste to the wine, a high country wine has to be tasted to be believed. I enjoy totally different wines here, because the cold climate changes the flavour of the grape – throw away your usual drop and branch out!
If you want a water based holiday, Lake Eildon is not that far away, and you can get into just about any form of water sports you want there, swimming, fishing, jet ski, water ski, or just lazing around with a picnic.
As you would imagine in this magnificent country, you can ride a lot of things – horses, motor bikes, mountain bikes and just bikes. You can also have a go in a helicopter if you like, that really is a brilliant way to see the countryside.
One of the things I like to do when we are on holiday is to find the local markets, particularly farmers markets, you get a chance to see what is grown locally and get some really good quality food. The Mansfield Farmers Market is held at the Mansfield Primary School on the fourth Saturday of each month (except January) it looks well worth a visit. If that one does not fit into your holiday dates, then the Mansfield Trash and Treasure is held on the second Sunday of every month and has food as well.
If you want a little on-park entertainment, then the swimming pool, playground and tennis court should help you out there.
Mansfield has a lot more to do than you know, and the High Country Holiday Park has the accommodation you want while you discover the area.
