I have been to Darwin a couple of times now and wish I had not left it so long. This place is amazing, not just for its place in our history, but because Darwin seems to understand that living can, and should, be fun!
Before I get carried away with the tourist parts of Darwin, one of the pleasures of spending time here is to stay in a superb resort – and the Darwin Freespirit Resort is just that. I like the name Freespirit, it seems to go with Darwin life, but it actually is an outstanding management company with a eight parks in NT, Qld and NSW.
But, back to Darwin Freespirit. You get an unbelievable choice of cabins, there are 12 different styles and layouts, it really depends on how many people , what you want in the cabin and your budget. Their website actually shows them far better than I could describe them. If you select the Accommodation button, then the cabin you want to look at, then you get a map, inventory and virtual tour – brilliant!
If you take your van or tent, you will not be disappointed either. There are powered and unpowered sites, as an added bonus every five premium sites have two bathrooms for their own use. Great idea, particularly if you are staying for a while.
Once you are set up and settled in, then it is time to have a look at, and try out, what the resort has to offer, and that will take the best part of another day! Amongst the facilities there are are three pools, a giant jumping pillow and the on-site Elements Bar and Bistro.
You can book tours at the office which makes it really good, because you get information based on local knowledge. Darwin has heaps of interesting things to do, ranging from the amazing Mindil Markets to bomb shelters from WW II. The first time I went to the Mindil Markets I made the mistake of eating before I went. This has to be the most amazing collection of food stalls I have seen in years, and the smells were just so tantalise. Next time I go, it will be with a blanket and bottle of wine to sit on the open spaces and enjoy dinner from the stalls – what a treat that would be.
Darwin is a wonderful place to do some shopping too, there are the usual range of malls, but there are also some lovely other shops too. Shopping is such a personal thing, but I would hazzard a guess that everyone would find something they liked in and aroundhere. How can you forget that Darwin is the jump off point for so much else that the Territory holds including the Litchfield and Kakadu National Parks.
I have usually been to Darwin in the shoulder season, just after the end of the main season, which means that I get to do all the things that I want, but there are just fewer people around. Yes, it can be a bit warm, but that's not such a bad thing, and it is easy to cool down at the end of the day in the pools and air conditioning at Darwin Freespirit Resort.
