Where to start to cover this amazing area, well nature was there first, so the Ningaloo Reef is top of the list. Reefs need warm seas to grow and normally do not survive on the western side of a land mass, but the Leeuwin counter current takes a stream of warm water down the WA coast, hence the Ningaloo Reef known as a fringing reef, which stretches 260km from Bundegi Beach (near Exmouth) to Amherst Point south of Coral Bay. The Reef is really close to the beach in some spots, only 100m away, up to 4km in others.
The Ningaloo Marine Park was declared in 1987 to protect over 200 species of hard coral, 50 species of soft coral and hundreds species of fish. It is also famous for the soft hearted whalesharks who pay a call between April and June. Just imagine being able to snorkel around with a shark!
With such a special area, there has to be somewhere special to stay that adds to the area, without damaging it, and Bayview Coral Bay, run by the Brogan family, is just that. The founder, Bill Brogan came to Coral Bay in 1973 and found a gem with no facilities, but stunning beauty. Very carefully the family began to develop their property.
From something with just two units in 1978 to a ‘village’ with a huge range of accommodation and sites that can take up to 1200 people has taken just 40 years. But, the development has been done very carefully to preserve the area, yet provide the modern services that people take for granted.
Through the Brogans hard work the township now has electricity, water, shopping centre, housing for locals and a sewerage system.
They also run glass bottom boats tours and charters. If you want to stay in the village, then there is plenty to do there do, with an on-site licenced restaurant, playground, tennis court, volley ball and swimming pool with a heated toddlers pool.
While the family was busy developing their resort, they were also concerned about the environment. The North West Research Association, in association with the Murdoch University Association has established a research station in Coral Bay. The NWRA undertakes a range of projects including the effects of coral stress and the the no-take zone on the coral. The actual building, which sleeps up to 10 and includes a laboratory and office facilities, was donated by the Brogan Damily, and is maintained by Bayview Coral Bay.
Coral Bay is about 2 hours flying time or two days driving from Perth heading north and this amazing area deserves it well earned reputation as a must see and swimming with the whalesharks is a must do.
