We were on a trip north to Mt Isa, and planned to spend a couple of nights in Charleville. We arrived at Bailey Bar Caravan Park and were immediately hit with the fact that we had not left ourselves enough time at the park, let alone to see everything that Charleville has to offer.
But first we settled onto our site, and they do know what size van will fit on what site, there is a new camp kitchen and TV room to go with the upgraded camping ground and a couple of new cabins added to their existing range if you want real luxury.
Within the first few hours we were part of the most hectic and entertaining progressive auction of 10 racing yabbies, all finely trained to win the yabbie equivalent of the Melbourne Cup. With Julian as the auctioneer it was dangerous to wave a fly away or even blink, and with Wendy collecting the money no-one missed donating to the Royal Flying Doctor Service. By the time the race was run, eight yabbies were asleep but two crossed the line. Who won did not matter as the RFDS was nearly $200 better of at the end.
We spent time the next day looking around. I was impressed with the tour of the Charleville School for Distant Education, to see how the kids are educated, how the on air classes work and just how effective the whole system is for our huge distances.
We spent an hour or so at the RFDS centre in town, which showed the history of the service and highlighted just how important it is to keep it flying. Not only does the RFDS provide emergency services, but they are the local GP when they fly in for regular clinics.
Charleville has some old buildings and the Hotel Corones was officially 80 in 2009. Night time was set aside for the Bilbies, and Cosmos – two experiences that you cannot leave Charleville without seeing. Bilbies are nocturnal but with the clever use of red light you can see some of the breeding colony. The Cosmos Show is literally out of this world, as we swept the unbelievable clear sky over Charleville to see Alpha Centauri, a huge globular cluster of over 1,000,000 stars and a brilliantly clear Saturn – amongst others.
We did not leave enough time to enjoy the camp fire dinners or the lamb spit roast that Wendy cooks during the week (see their website for details) with local entertainment. Winter season at Bailey Bar is always entertaining, and Charleville is packed with places to go and things to do.
