Townville is an interesting place, there is actually a lot going on there, although that seems to be a well kept secret. So, now you have decided to go and find out for yourself, the first thing to do is find somewhere to stay.
BIG4 Walkabout Palms Holiday Park should be high on your list. From the street you would not know that there is a magnificent park hidden away, the petrol station at the front might be a reason for that. But on the positive side, you really do not have far to go to fill up.
The park itself is just delightful, lots of tropical gardens, as you would imagine, and a massive range of on-site accommodation to chose from – 9 styles all told from basic back packer style bunk house to deluxe holiday villas. As you would imagine for a tropical park all of the accommodation has air conditioning.
If you are bringing your own rig or tent, then you have a choice too, unpowered sites, powered slab or grass sites, plus some en-suite sites. Some of the sites are specially designed to take big rigs up to 11metres long.
Now, you are there and you have found all the things to do at the park, including the swimming pools, playground, jumping pillow, stocked up on a few things from the shop, checked out the BBQs and promised the kids that they can have a go on the triks later, it is time to have a look at Townsville.
BIG4 Walkabout Palms is about 10km from to the Strand, a 2.2km man made beach front ‘promenade’. At one end you will find the Tobruk Pool, at the other is the Rockpool. The Townsville Council made a decision to upgrade the historic Tobruk Pool but it should be open again in 2011. It was built in the 1960’s and includes a gallery of stars – swimming stars that is – for people such as Dawn Fraser, Murray Rose and Lorraine Crapp who trained there as part of their Olympic preparations.
One place that deserves a good long look is the Reef HQ, an excellent display of the world underwater. I did not know, until I went there a week or so ago, that the coral in the tanks is so connected to the coral in the nearby ocean that it spawns at the same time!
While on a Townsville discovery tour, Palmer Street has some excellent places to eat, with a great range of menus, something for everyone.
Townsville is a place to stop and see, and BIG4 Walkabout Palms Holiday Park is just waiting for your call.
