WILL & KATE REVIEW BIG4 HOWARD SPRINGS - N.T.

Will & Kate are still travelling around our great downunder and experienced a fantastic stay at BIG4, Howard Springs in Darwin. They have explored everything possible around Darwin including the Mindil Sunset Markets, where Kate purchased many bargains which has left Will finding it a little hard to pack their grass van which Kate says seems to be bursting at the seams. What's Up Downunder asked them to review BIG4 Howard Springs and the following is how they describe their enjoyable stay.
"Arriving in Darwin we were really pleased to enter the family run BIG4 Howard Springs caravan park where we were greeted by Ross & Viv Lavender, the friendly owners where we were promptly booked in and advised we would be shown to our site. This is the first caravan park where we have been driven to our site by a man on a quad bike which is so much easier than trying to follow a map with a highlighted line drawn on it.
"We were directed by Ross to a beautiful grassy powered site complete with wonderful shady trees. The park was quite busy as it was peak season and school holidays and we were told it was always like this at this time of year with many people returning to stay year after year which is a good sign.Everyone waved as we drove through and this is always our way of testing how friendly a caravan park is. Only the grumpy caravan parks don't smile and wave at you when you arrive through in a grass van, but here at BIG4 Howard Springs we immediately felt very welcome and comfortable.
"BIG4 Howard Springs has sites of all shapes and sizes catering for the needs of every traveller from the largest of caravans to the smallest of tents. Our site was medium size which was split off from the caravans behind us by a large row of trees and shrubs which you couldn't see through and it gave the area a great rainforest feel. The planting and rockeries throughout the site were all done by Ross and it made such a difference to have all the plants to split you off from other areas of the park. At night you can relax and look up at the stars while watching possums jumping and chasing each other through the trees.
"After setting up our van and awning we went for a walk to check out the amenities, the first thing I always do at a new caravan park. They were installed about a year ago and are beautiful and one of the nicest we have experienced throughout the whole of Australia. Made up of 14 individual bathrooms, they were clean and new with shower heads the size of dinner plates. We were told that there will be another beautiful amenities block going up soon as well. While the blocks nearer to the front are older and more traditional they are kept very clean and pleasant to be in.
"We walked around the rest of the park where we found two saltwater pools, one which is in the shade for most of the day which is good when it's very hot and the other considerably warmer as it gets the full heat of the sun. There are also two spa pools bubbling away throughout the day and these are very refreshing and a welcome retreat when you are in the heat of Darwin. There is also a squash court near to the second pool and rackets and balls can be hired at the office.
"If this isn't enough to keep you entertained, there are also events put on most evenings. A wonderful sausage sizzle, complete with live entertainment gets everyone dancing on Monday evenings and on Tuesday you can learn how to make and play a didgeridoo. On Thursday you can catch a lift on the park bus for only $10 a seat to the Mindil Sunset Markets. I became rather addicted to the markets and as we were supposed to be stopping in Darwin to make money and not spend it I guess this wasn't necessarily a good thing as I think John will allude to the fact Will has a great task trying to pack our grass van which is bursting at the seams.
"BIG4 Howard Springs is located south of the city and the recent addition of a new road has cut the journey time into Darwin to only 15-minutes. Being out of the city means there is less noise from the airport and flight paths. It also means you are much closer to many of the exciting tours they have on offer in this part of the country, including Hunter Safari, Adelaide River Cruises, and Berry Springs. Don't forget to have a look at our review of the Hunter Safari which is already on the Whats Up Downunder website.
"It's also only 7 km from Palmerston where there's a large shopping centre with lovely shops including a large Woolworths for all your food shopping. If you are on a bit of a budget like us there's a range of restaurants if you feel like letting someone else do the cooking for a change. You can also reach this shopping centre by a new bike track, making it a nice bike ride and keeping you off main roads and away from all the cars.
"Finally, if you are looking for a relaxing, friendly and shady caravan park near to all that Darwin has to offer, but without the hustle and bustle of bigger parks in the middle of the city then we thoroughly reccomend you head to BIG4 Howard Springs, because this is definitely the place for you. We have thoroughly enjoyed our time here and a big thanks to Viv & Ross for having us at such a wonderful caravan park. We are about to head off to Katherine and also look at Edith Falls and we look forward to telling everyone at Whats Up Downunder more about our travels soon".
