Some people only want to have a holiday on the beach, others know that holidays in the hills are just as good, if not better! I am happy to admit that I really enjoy being in the hills, there is something special about waking up in the mornings to the slight sound of trees rustling their leaves. The birds love the area too, although I am not always that keen on those incredibly early birds who love to call in the dawn.
But, if you want the hills and trees, then BIG4 Atherton Woodlands Tourist Park is a great choice. Atherton is the hill area for Cairns, and can take the sting out of a hot day for you. It is about 90km away, but the height brings the temperature down with cooler days and nights plus the humidity is banished to the coast!
The park is a delight, there is a huge range of cabins to suit all needed and pockets, the sites are lovely too. When you are in the hills you cannot work on straight lines, so everything sort of meanders around the contours, which gives everyone a bit more privacy and space.
There is a stunning swimming pool and lovely playground to keep the family happy when they are having time on the park. During the summer months (and don’t forget that it is cooler here with temperatures ranging from 17 to 25 degrees) there is a stream running at the back of the park and you may well be lucky enough to see that elusive Aussie icon – a platypus.
There are plenty of places to visit in the area, with wonderful waterfalls and walks. There are lakes with cruises, plus you can walk around them if you have the energy. The two main lakes are Lake Eacham and Lake Barrine, both are crater lakes and carry World Heritage listings. You can take a short 4.5km stroll around Lake Eacham, but it goes up to a 6.5km for Lake Barrine. Mind you, the range of trees, animals and birds that you will see are worth it. Scattered around are some fresh water swimming holes that can really test your understanding of how cold fresh water can be!
If you need to work on your relaxation techniques, then you can book a massage with your choice of where to have it, in your accommodation, caravan or in the Balinese Cabana. If you want to take the time to have a good look at the gardens you may be able to see some of the birds and butterflies that are attracted by the special plantings. As you can imagine these are award winning gardens and the pride of the park.
