Jamroc, Q Super Centre, Gold Coast, Qld
This country of ours is amazing, I think you can find food from just about any other country in the world, and today we went Jamaican, on the Gold Coast!
The Gold Coast is well known for its fabulous beaches and a hectic night life, but it is also home to a huge number of massive shopping centres, some are a days outing just to get from one end to the other. So, when we are on the Gold Coast we tend to be a bit predictable and go to one of the slightly smaller ones, the Q Super Centre in Mermaid Waters. Mind you, the way it is growing it may not be in the ‘slightly smaller’ section for much longer. Another reason I like the shopping centres is that so many of them have shade sails throughout the car park, it certainly helps keep the car a little cooler.
Besides its size, I really like the range of cafes that they have there, although they do change from time to time. This time we found a new one, Jamroc which serves Jamaican Jerk Chicken. If you do not eat chicken then you can have a choice from one or two of the vegetarian dishes, but be fair, this is a chicken place.
Never having eaten Jamaican Jerk Chicken before, we played it a bit safe on the strength of the spice level, and there are four to choose from. You can go Chilled Out (the mild one), through Traditional then Hot Affair until you get to Rasta’s Revenge! Our order was for a ManDeville Wrap for me and a Montego Wrap for Peter. We added in a serve of rice and peas (although I have never seen peas that colour before but they tasted just fine) and a serve of Festival, this was another new taste for us. Festival is a described as ‘Slightly sweet, crispy cornmeal dumpling. An ideal finishing touch to any meal.”
The food was excellent, I was really happy with the Traditional level of spice, but Peter felt he could have gone one more to the Hot Affair! Basically they were both wraps with delicious chicken and salad plus some interesting sauces and spices, which were freshly prepared for you. The Festival was delicious, and to me should only be eaten at the end of a meal because it is surprisingly sweet, with a crunchy outer and a soft inner. I have no idea what the cornmeal actually tastes like because all I got was the sweet – lovely!
You can also buy the jerk sauces from Jamroc, and their brochure says they are expanding, who knows there may be one close to you very soon. I was impressed with it, and would happily go back for another go – so long as I can add in the Festival to finish on.
