Peter and I were in Yamba, doing a little bit of work, and enjoying having a look around. It was time for lunch, so we asked Amanda, the extremely friendly receptionist at Calypso Caravan Park if there was somewhere she recommended.
Her suggestion was to go to a cafe called Bean Scene, she had heard very good reports from people who had been there. Well, we were more than happy to take the recommendation in a town that is just full of places to eat. You can spend a lot of time looking at them all trying to decide!
It is not actually easy to find and is quite small, but once you find it there are no doubts about its popularity with the local residents, and it does not take long to find out why.
The menu is fairly usual, unless you turn over to the back where you see some really interesting things. Peter decided on a satay chicken in turkish bread, but I found the salads on the back of the menu and went with a sweet potato and walnut salad.
The feed back (good words for food!) is that the satay chicken had plenty of good tasting satay, you knew what you were eating and Peter said it was good. My salad was just brilliant, the flavours were lovely when you added in the feta, fresh beetroot, and a beautiful balsamic vinegar dressing. As you can tell from my ranting, it really was wonderful. I love salads, and I certainly would eat that one again – in fact I will have a go at it when I get home.
The coffee was OK, but it came in glasses without handles. I like to drink mine when it is hot and not wait for it to cool down, so I have learnt how to fold the serviette so that it stays on the glass. But, I would much rather have it in a glass with a handle.
While we were there, we saw so many people come in and leave quickly, but it was not through disappointment, rather they had pre-ordered their lunches and just had to go in and collect it – very good service for people working hard in the town.
The service was good too, it was a hot day and we had chosen to sit outside, under the awning with a bottle of chilled water to cool us down. When the waiter asked if we were ready for our coffee (we like it after the meal), she asked if we wanted to move inside where the air conditioner was working wonders. We decided we would stay outside, but it was the thought that counted. Just that little bit extra, and it makes a huge difference.
With a total bill of $25.00 for our lunch, we thought it was worth every cent. This is one little cafe that is worth finding.
