It is so easy to remember that song, so quintessentially Australian, sung by that oustanding entertainer the late Slim Dusty. For years I thought it was just a song, I mean can you imagine a pub running out of beer. Well, I found out that it does exist. I am led to beleive that there are a few claims to the title, but if you google the name, then you get the one and only Pub with no Beer at Taylors Arm, New South Wales.
The site at www.pubwithnobeer.com.au has a bit of information on everything, including definite details on where Taylors Arm is, for people like me who had no idea. So, I will share it with you, it is on the NSW North Coast, 26km inland from Macksville.
The pub is full of memorabillia covering the entire history of the area and the pub, plus heaps of touches about Slim Dusty. Old vinyl records are on the walls, in their pristine original sleeves, photos on any just about anything you can think of to do with that song and that pub.
The day we choose to go was a wet day, and we met a road closed sign, so took the alternative route and were more than a little glad that we had a four wheel drive. That route was a wet and slippery dirt track about 3km long – but if felt a lot longer as we went up hill and down dale on it. When we arrived, we decided that lunch would restore us to our happy selves so ordered lunch. Peter had a steak sandwich and I had fish and chips – and they were excellent.
As the day was so poor, the pub was really quiet, not good for the pub, but lovely for us. It was a pleasure to be able to wander around and look at things without getting in other peoples way. Selfish of us I know, but that was just how it was.
There was one thing that did make the day really amusing, after we recovered from the road, and that was that the pub with no beer was, for the day at least, the pub with no water! They had run out of water (a small leak somewhere in the system which just got bigger and bigger), so had shipped some in that morning. The only problem was that the leak now seemed to have turned into a full bore blockage, so there was still no water. I am sure that the staffs sense of humour would have been more tested if the pub had been busy.
Peter talked to them about the best way to get back, so we took the other road, and I am pleased to say that it was sealed and really was open all the way through.
The Pub with no beer does exists, it is not at all hard to find once you know where Taylors Arm is, serves a really good meal and does have beer (and water)!
